R&D Machine was founded in 1992 to provide prototype and short-run precision machined components to aerospace and defense companies in Florida. Carl and Hilary Whitley purchased the company in 1999 and accelerated its growth by leveraging their combined managerial skills, Carl in engineering/operations and Hilary in finance/accounting.
In April 2022, Compass Precision purchased R&D Machine and combined it with its other five locally-run, decentralized machine shops under the Compass umbrella. R&D Machine continues to operate autonomously with its own management and resources, but benefits from Compass’s ability to invest aggressively in new equipment and systems and shoulder mundane administrative tasks. This enables R&D to pursue new business opportunities and focus intently on satisfying customer needs while back-office functions are handled elsewhere.
R&D Machine has ample resources to machine precision, mission-critical parts for its growing customer base in Florida and elsewhere throughout the United States and abroad.
We have more then thirty (30) skilled employees including CNC machinist and programmers, quality control personnel including CMM programmers, and a support staff second to none. Our CNC equipment base consists entirely of Haas machines, simplifying training and service. We have nineteen Haas 3, 4, and 5-axis mills and lathes which run across two shifts. Our CNC programmers use Esprit software for modeling and developing tool paths. Our quality assurance staff programs three Zeiss CMM machines used to automatically measure hundreds of dimensions of the most complicated parts.
Our quality system is certified to the ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100D standards. This system ensures each customer receives machined parts which dimensionally meet their part specifications and are finished correctly. Our customers can use their machined parts for further assembly without any additional work or inspection.
